Benefits, Requirements, and Content of the Summer Teacher Institute
How Teacher Participants Will Benefit:
​1.  Participation in a 4-day Summer Teacher Institute on Belle Isle in 2020.
     a. Gain new knowledge and skills through presentations, hands-on activities, field trips, and lesson plan development.
     b. Receive classroom supplies, activity guides, and other resources.
     c.  Receive $800 for attending a summer institute, $200 for a refresher fall workshop, and up to $1100  total in stipends for participation over 2 years.
     d. Choose to earn 24 SCECHs OR 2 graduate credits from Michigan Technological University at no additional cost, with completion of course requirements (assigned reading and preparation of lesson plans).
2.  Bring your class on a field trip to the Belle Isle Aquarium (BIA) to engage your students in scientific investigations, science career explorations, and hands-on activities.
3.    Opportunities for $500 grants to develop classroom projects.
Program Requirements of Teacher Participants:
  •  Attend a 4-day Summer Teacher Institute on Belle Isle in 2020. 
    • The Institutes are fun and provide instructional take-aways.
    • Sign up for the program NOW and become eligible to apply for small grants.
  •  Bring classes on a field trip to the Belle Isle Aquarium.
  •  Participate in activities after the Summer Teacher Institute to assess teachers’ and students’ STEM interest, knowledge, and behavior. Participation in this project is voluntary.

Content of the Summer Teacher Institute

4-Day Summer Teacher Institute
at the Belle Isle Aquarium

August 3 - 6, 2020
The Institute will meet Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am-3:30 pm.
This professional development experience is designed to enhance content knowledge and pedagogy skills of fifth grade classroom teachers to teach about aquatic systems (e.g., lakes and ponds on Belle Isle and at the Belle Isle Aquarium) via field trips, data collection and analysis, lesson plan development, and hands-on activities. Science, social studies, math, language arts, and technology standards will be woven into the Institute, including discussions with experts and science career role models.
