NEW GAME:  Belle Isle Chutes and Ladders.  Have virtual fun at Belle Isle while learning about animals we love and others we worry about!  Download and print the Chutes and Ladders game board and pieces by clicking on the images of the game board and character pieces below.  The game usually uses a 6-point spinner or a die to determine how many boxes each player moves on their turn.  If you don't have one at home, you can use an on-line spinner--for example here's one to use:  Spinner (Note: since the Belle Isle Chutes and Ladders game is a bit smaller than the usual chutes and ladders game you can change it to a 4-point spinner by clicking on "wheel size" and choosing "4 numbers").  How to play:  Cut out a marker for each player from the top of each "character card" (each child can choose by color or whether they would like to be a sturgeon, crayfish, mussel, or turtle [sometimes slow but steady wins the race!].  The game starts at the bottom of the board.  Spin to see who goes first. The goal is to get to square 49 at the top of the board.  If your marker lands on the bottom of a ladder, you immediately go up to the square at the top of the ladder.  If your marker lands at the top of a chute, you immediately go down to the square at the bottom of the chute.  The winner is the player who gets to the square 49 (FINISH) first.  Read the messages on the board and on the character cards to learn more about invasive species and how to prevent or control them!  Note:  Game design is based on a game designed by Milton-Bradley and sold by Hasbro, which itself is based on an ancient Indian game known as Moksha Patam (snakes and ladders).
