  • Additional information about Invasive Species can be obtained from the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN, http://www.misin.msu.edu/).
  • A smartphone app (http://www.misin.msu.edu/tools/apps/ ) is available that can enable teachers and their students to become active “citizen science” participants in preventing the spread of invasive species by reporting new sightings.
Among the messages that Dr. Jeff hopes teachers will get from these readings is how important they are for the choices of students to choose STEM.  Here's a quote from a working scientist (from a paper that's not in the list, but it makes that very point):
"My decision to pursue science started actually when I was pretty young...it actually had to do with the teachers that I had when I was in grammar school. There was a young teacher that I had for 2 years for science. He was a fantastic teacher, full of energy and always encouraging of extra work that I wanted to do."
and from the Gallagher paper:
"Teachers ... make a difference, as suggested by the significant contribution of students’ perception of teacher enthusiasm...The perception that a teacher finds the subject matter interesting may enhance students’ interest to the point that it may play a part in later decisions about future course selection."
Dr. Jeff recommends  " The selected readings focus on questions like 'Why fifth grade/middle school?', 'What is the role of teachers in promoting student choices?' 'What do teachers and their students need?'  If I had to choose just three of these references as top priority I guess I would choose these listed below(click on the author's name to download). But please consider them all and decide for yourself which you think may be the most useful."
