OPPORTUNITIES FOR fifth grade EDUCATION SPONSORSHIP
OF A BELLE ISLE AQUARIUM EXHIBIT
APPLICATION DEADLINES:
January 31, 2018 and annually on the same date thereafter (Also Required: Register for a BIA Summer Teacher Institute) DPSCD 5th Grade teachers or their students (with teacher endorsement) are encouraged to apply. APPLY NOW The only requirement to apply to be an education sponsor of a BIA exhibit is that the teacher who applies or endorses a student application MUST have registered to do a Belle Isle Aquarium (BIA) Summer Teacher Institute. It is not necessary to have completed the Institute to apply to sponsor a tank or a species; however, you MUST BE REGISTERED for an Institute and can do so by clicking on "SUMMER INSTITUTE" in the navigation bar above.
------------------------------- The Summer Teacher Institute is part of an integrated process that prepares teachers and their class to achieve the best educational impact from bringing their class on a field trip to the BIA and from sponsoring an organism or tank at the BIA. Registering for a Summer Institute is required before applying to sponsor an organism or tank at the BIA. Register for a Summer Institute on-line (click button, below) before July 5, 2019 |
Who can apply:
Groups of at least ten fifth grade students whose teacher has registered for the Belle Isle Aquarium (BIA) Summer Teacher Institute are encouraged to apply. Sponsorship goals: The goal of this project is to engage students in place-based learning by having them focus on organisms and ecosystems represented at the BIA. BIA educators invite groups of ten or more students to identify their favorite BIA exhibits and to commit themselves to becoming its education sponsor. Education sponsors are expected to do the following: • Learn more about the species in the sponsored exhibit; • Based on what they’ve learned, prepare signs, pictures, and descriptions about their sponsored species, for possible display at the Aquarium. • Present their sponsored organisms and display supplements to the public during a “DPSCD Day at the BIA” or other planned occasion at the BIA. Education sponsorship grants of $100 to assist students and teachers in preparing the educational materials for presentation and possible display at the Aquarium are available. The funds are to be used for students to show their interest in the exhibits at the BIA and will give students and their families a sense of “ownership” of the BIA. The same sense of ownership can be said of preparing the signs, pictures and descriptions: when a student visits the BIA with his or her family, the student can proudly say they were responsible for the public learning more. Sponsorship activities that involve student-centered groups such as a student "STEM Club" are especially encouraged. See the Grants page if you are interested in funds of up to $500 for science or science career projects that may take place in your school or neighborhood. To apply for a Grade 5 educational sponsorship of a BIA exhibit: A list of fish or exhibits for which education sponsorship is invited will be provided on this page (in this spot) in the near future.
